Writing Tip: Words on the Page

For some getting words on a page is easier than for others. What's really hard is taking that first draft and refining it into something readers want to read. I've met more than one writer who thinks those first words are perfect enough. They have no need for critique from fellow writers or even an editor. Often times those writers encountered poor help when they were first starting out. Help that attempted to crush their voice rather than help it shine. I have to say, I've been there - sort of. Those I worked with didn't mean to step on my voice - they were just sharing everything they learned with me at once. Until I was able to absorb some things and meet a few other writers with some helpful insight, I didn't know how to protect my own voice or truly use the knowledge I'd been given. I am thankful over and over that God guided me in the right direction and made me a sponge for learning. I'm also thankful that even though all that editing was terrifying to face - He helped me break it down into bite size pieces. I pray the writers I've met who have become leery of editing will one day be able to step beyond that fear and encounter writers and editors who lead them to amazing heights. They have talent. It just needs a little craft and polish. (And, no, I'm not saying my writing is perfect - but it sure is better than when I started out!)

Hope you enjoyed this month's Writing Tip!
