    Writing Tips: Theme

Sometimes I stop and read back over some of my writings. As I read them, laughing, occasionally crying, gasping, just like a reader re-enjoying a favorite comfort read, I begin to notice themes in my work. A common one is friendship. My short stories with Ye Old Dragon Books' anthologies have all had friendships in them - some more prominent than others. Sonji, my YA horse fantasy, features a friendship between a boy and girl growing into something more. My two stories in The Adventures of a Horse Named George rely on the friendship between George and Nancy and them knowing each other well enough to identify trouble for one. Friendship is a theme that's always been special to my heart. It's not easy, but it matters. Helps us see beyond ourselves to our potential. It also reflects a bit of how God wishes to relate to us - not as ruler, but as friend. Someone who wants to share in our victories and failures. What about you? What recurring themes do you see in your favorite books or your own writings? How do they connect to you?

Hope you enjoyed this month's Writing Tip!
