Writing Tips: Why Do People Read? Or Not Read?

I read for the adventure, to relax, to escape, and many other reasons. Why do you read? The same reasons? Others?

I tripped over an interesting quote this month from the infamous Mark Twain: "The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read." Why do you suppose some people who have been gifted the knowledge to read don't use it much? Are they simply too busy? Are their eyes giving them fits? Something else?

What do you think would encourage those people to read? Perhaps sharing Mark Twain's thoughts on the matter would be all that is needed. Perhaps not. Perhaps sharing why you read will help. I've found sharing the reasons behind why I do something - like reading - to help people open up more than smacking them over the head with quotes or statistics.

Still, I can't help but wonder about the meaning behind Mr. Twain's quote. What are you thoughts on it?

PS- Do you think not reading would affect a person's writing?
